Democratic Candidate for Collier County Commission, District 1
John was born in Toronto, Canada in 1965 and at eight months was joyfully chosen by prominent attorney John H. Jenkins and his dental hygienist wife, Edythe who gladly retired to devote herself to be a stay at home mom. Two years later the Jenkins family adopted Carole followed with a child of their own three years later, Elizabeth. As the Jenkins family grew, so did the career of the patriarch, culminating in the appointment by Prime Minister Brian Mulroney as a Federal Justice. The Jenkins family seeking a vacation condo, bought at the Tradewinds in Marco Island in 1974. Young John would spend extended periods of his youth in Florida. The Jenkins still live in the Greater Toronto Area and will celebrate sixty years of marriage on August 15th, 2020.
John attended public school and excelled at the Arts and participated in wrestling and rugby and football. While attending Secondary School John found his calling when he joined the prestigious St. John Ambulance Brigade Volunteer EMT Service. It was his work with the Brigade that made John realize that a life of service to others would always be his North Star. The rigorous training and working with volunteers of all ages and from all walks of life broadened John’s perspective on civic responsibility as well.
After Secondary School John studied in Thunder Bay Ontario at Confederation College for Law and Security Administration. While attending college in Thunder Bay John served with the Lake Superior Scottish Regiment (LSSR), 18th Svc Btn, Military Police.
John found another cause to champion with the Kinsmen and Kinette Clubs of Canada. Established in 1920 this non-profit has raised over one billion dollars to improve Canada’s communities. His proudest achievement with the organization was launching a first-time event, coordinating 7 different clubs throughout Durham Region, (974 square miles) and that ended up raising $25,000 for Cystic Fibrosis Research.
Upon finishing his studies John launched his first highly successful entrepreneurial effort. John ran a very successful private investigation and paralegal services firm. His expertise was in high demand as an expert witness in crime scene analysis and he developed an impeccable reputation amongst the most prestigious law firms in Toronto.
In 1987 John and his American wife decided to pull up northern roots, dump the snow tires and head to John’s other home, Florida, USA. Starting over was challenging at first but soon John’s enthusiasm for Collier County was paying off.
John landed a job with Island Oldies on Marco Island. Not exactly raking in the ratings John switched the station to a sports format and not only became a popular on-air personality interviewing prominent sports personalities but his local efforts to serve fellow residents like “The Beach Patrol” (A radio studio on a pontoon boat) Sundays helped many local eateries reach their audience.
Never one to be satisfied with success John launched Auto Nanny a unique concierge car service that maintains automobiles for people that leave vehicles in SWFL year round. Auto Nanny, Inc. has been proudly serving Naples for twenty-three years.
When John moved to Florida he fully embraced life in Collier County. He has raised two smart, responsible sons twenty-one and seventeen who have thrived in the public education system and the community. Always wanting to acquire a higher academic degree John received his B.A. from Kaplan University graduating Summa Cum Laude. To cement his SWFL bona fides John recently discovered that his family has a Key named for them just south of the Port of the Islands; John will keep you updated as he learns more about this new branch of the Jenkins ties to Florida. John proudly CHOSE to become an American citizen in 2001. “I am first honored TO BE an American Citizen, but even more than that I am honored that my American brothers and sisters would bestow that upon me, and embrace me as one of their own.”
Always believing in doing his civic duty, John has served as President of the Naples Kiwanis and is a Founding Member of Immokalee Kiwanis. John spent over a decade coaching with Greater Naples Little League and served as a Guardian Ad Litem. John has also served as Vice-Chair of the Collier County Public Transportation Advisory Committee for the past 2 ½ years.
John is a member of Unity of Naples and in the past has served on the Board of Directors.
